Dana Point is a beachside city located in Orange County, California. Dana Point is just south of Laguna Beach and west of San Juan Capistrano. This is a smaller city with 33,000 residents. This city gets its name from the headland of Dana Point, which took its name from Richard Henry Dana, Jr. Dana was the author of Two Years Before the Mast. A replica of Dana’s ship, the Pilgrim, sits in Dana Point Harbor. The ship is now used as classroom by the Ocean Institute. This area is now California Historical Landmark #189. There is easy access to Dana Point on State Route 1.

There are six public beaches along the Dana Point coastline; Capistrano County Beach, Poche Beach, Baby Beach, Dana Strand Beach, Monarch Beach and Salt Creek Beach.
Students living in Dana Point attend schools in the Capistrano Unified School District. There are several elementary schools and middle schools throughout the city, but just one high school. Dana Hills High School is one of the oldest high schools in the area, opening in 1972. The high school is well known for their cross country program, they have won the California State Title in 1988, 2007, 2008 and 2009. There are eight private schools in Dana Point which serve 1,800 students.
